I chose this name for Mary with Wang Gongyi’s approval. The inscription is Chinese “mali” for Mary, mother of Jesus; “dan,” an old name for Laozi, the founder of Daoism; and “fo,” the Chinese word for Buddha. Mr. Sam Chiao purchased the stone in Taiwan. While it was a pretty stone it had soft patches (the dark coloring) which made it difficult to carve.
