Huang Binhong 黃賓虹 (1865-1955)

The Chinese artist Huang Binhong was born in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. He is best known for his paintings and drawings, and as a writer and teacher. I have not seen any seals carved by him but would be surprised if he had not made any at some time.

“Considered one of the last great literati artists in China. He was not only an avid collector of ancient seals, beginning with the acquisition of a large number of seals originally belonging to the seal collector Wang Qishu, but also a serious student of seal engraving. He published one of the earliest comprehensive treatises on engraving in modern times. His approach to composition in painting, particularly during his late years, can be characterized by the positive use of void and was clearly related to the aesthetic values of seal engraving.”
