Use the Masters

Written by Lu

Artist’s often struggle over where to place their seals on their artwork. One of the best ways to learn is by looking at the old masters. For models, choose paintings or calligraphy with a signature, text, and one or two seals. Avoid art with more seals as these may not have been on the work originally but added later by collectors. Look at where the artist put their seals and try to decide why they put them where they did. It helps to cover up a seal and see how it changes the design—this works too for signatures and other text.
