Wu Shijie

I recently came across this interesting seal by an artist named Wu Shijie 吳士傑. I haven’t been able to find any information about him other than that he might possibly have lived during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912).

It’s unusual to see a seal from this pre-modern period with the characters slanted in different directions like this—which makes it look very post-modern.

The six characters 清閒且樂昇平 (Enjoying peace and leisure) are read in a common arrangement from top to bottom and right to left.

Here are two more seals by the same artist, both in more standard styles with nothing out of the ordinary or, for that matter, interesting about them. Like so many other seal carvers, he worked in a variety of styles.
