Here’s an interesting seal from the Shanghai Museum. The label simply says it represents the 12 Earthly Branches, was made of bronze, and created in the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368).
The Earthly Branches have been in use since at least the Shang dynasty (c1600–1046 BCE) and, though originally created in China, they are used throughout East Asia in those countries influenced by their larger neighbor. They are each associated with an animal, one of the five elements, and a time of day or night and are still in use today as part of the Chinese lunar calendar.
I like the modern look of this design, even though it is over seven hundred years old. The twelve animals are arranged each facing outward around a central square which probably contains characters (which have not been translated). The seal may perhaps have been used in place of a name seal or have been associated with Taoist practices.
