Buddhist Seals

Written by Lu

Here are some seals with Buddhist imagery.

Most come from Taiwan or Japan; Buddhism has only recently made a comeback in Mainland China—where it is tolerated but not supported by the government—and is infrequently depicted in seals from there. Buddhist seal carvers use both of what I call gongbi (fine line) and xieyi (rough, antique looking) styles. These are actually styles of Chinese painting, but I use the term for seals that best go with those styles.
