Pan Gangsi

Here’s another seal from the Shanghai Museum. This one is from the Xin dynasty (CE 9-23), so it’s over two thousand years old. The four characters begin in the upper right, then lower right, upper left, and finally lower left. This is most likely a personal seal as the characters 潘剛私印 say “the seal of Pan Gangsi.”

The folded style of the characters is very decorative.

The seal was cast in bronze, and you can see in the picture how rounded the edges are. This may be from intention but is more likely from age and use.
