I took a quick look today at the China-based website AliExpress. I was curious to see if they had any seal tools for sale but didn’t find any. In fact, when I entered the Chinese characters for a seal vise, all that came up were pet beds for cats and dogs (the word in Chinese is literally “seal bed”). A search in English for “Chinese seal carving” came back with quite a few seal stones, all overpriced. One, a brown shoushan stone with a roughly carved animal on top, much like the one shown here, was being sold as an antique for $586 US. In China it would probably sell for under $5 as what it really is—a poor quality modern tourist item. It’s definitely buyer beware.
